Nathaniel Massie, son of Charles Jr., born November 22, 1794, died December 5, 1870 is buried next to his second wife, Elizabeth Frances Rodes, 1809-1876, whose stone is broken into pieces. Nathaniel's stone reads:

"Filling many honorable positions in public life, he was loved, esteemed and respected in them all. He died as he had lived a sincere Christian man"

"Nathaniel was for a considerable period of his life a successful merchant in Waynesboro, but as his years increased, he returned to the old homestead on the borders of Nelson, where he died. He was twice married, first to Susan, daughter of Michael Woods, son of Col. John and secondly to Elizabeth, daughter of Matthew Rodes.

Elizabeth Frances Rodes, daughter of Matthew Rodes and Nancy Blackwell was born August 9, 1809 and died June 25, 1876.  She was the second wife of Nathaniel, married Feb. 24, 1831.  Her stone beside Nathaniel was broken in many pieces, the portion here shown has some marking that is discernable.  I believe it says in part: "Elizabeth F. daughter of Matthew Rodes."

The name Rodes is spelled often as Rhodes, note their son David Rhodes Massie.
